The all new BMW Boxer engine with ShiftCam technology

September 27, 2018

BMW R 1250 GSBMW have introduced the next generation of the boxer engine. Due to the ShiftCam technology, timing and valve stroke are variable. BMW promises an improved running culture in the lower rpm range also as a significantly increased power of 136 HP.

25 years after the introduction of the first four-valve boxer, BMW opens a new chapter in the evolution of the charismatic engine. The liquid-cooled Boxer now is equipped with complete new cylinder heads. The clou are camshafts, which allow the intake side specific timing for the low / medium rev range and high revs. In addition to the timing, the valve stroke is also varied. In parallel, the two intake valves per cylinder are opened asynchronously (time-delayed). This leads to a stronger turbulence of the air/fuel mixture, which should result in an improved filling of the cylinder – and thus the efficiency.

Other technical changes to the engine include the drive of the camshaft, which now is implemented by a toothed chain (previously roller chain), an optimization of the oil supply, two-jet injectors and a new exhaust system.

The bottom line is the costly redesign resulting in a power increase from 11 hp to 136 hp compared to the previous model. The peak power is available as usual at 7750 rpm. The torque increases from 125 to 143 Newton meters and is now already at 6250 tours (previously 6500 / min).

The new BMW Boxer engine will initially be used in the BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT models.

Electronics packages and equipment

As standard, the new boxer models already have two riding modes, ASC and Hill Start Control. As an optional, riding modes Pro with additional riding modes, Dynamic Traction Control DTC, ABS Pro (R 1250 RT Series), Hill Start Control Pro and Dynamic Brake Assist DBC are also available.
Likewise, the electronic suspension Dynamic ESA »Next Generation« with fully automatic load compensation can be ordered.
Numerous other equipment is offered.
